I was truly excited to read this book that purported to investigate and reveal the relationship between the enneagram and spiritual formation. Unfortunately, the first half of the book was no more than a stale overview or shallow survey of the enneagram that would only be of help to someone brand new to the discussion. Sadly, the second half was even less helpful. It was more of a “3 Easy Steps to a Quiet Time” than a helpful path to genuine spiritual formation. After being so excited to read this and so hopeful that it would be a resource I could share and recommend with enthusiasm, I am disappointed to say I won’t be able to recommend it to anyone. This book is a work of art with vivid images and motiving challenges throughout. Thoughtfully written, AJ Sherrill weaves truths for the reader to examine the enneagram number they identify with, not their “neighbor’s” number. It gives permission to accept ones talents and celebrate the way we each bring gifts to this world in our individual personality. It additionally debunks misunderstandings surrounding this tool and addresses the enneagram is not to be used as an excuse for unhealthy personality bend and tendencies.
